About Me

Hello and welcome.

I'm Matthew Lainchbury BA, a photographer born and raised in the rural beauty of Shropshire, UK. I discovered a natural flair for photography at an early age. This flourished into a passion thanks to the staff at the Shrewsbury Sixth Form College. My special thanks go to both Matthew Sergeant and Michael Doyle for their patience and advise throughout my time with them and beyond! With their assistance I developed my own individual look and style. They also introduced me to the delights of analogue photography and the secrets of the dark room!

I then pursued my photographic studies at The University of Chester, working towards a BA Hons Degree. University provided greater exposure to professionals such as Tom Wood, whose work includes Looking for Love (1989), Photie Man (2005) and Men and Women (2012). My main university projects 'Pre-match' and 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' were creatively influenced by the work of Tom Wood. Again, I wish to extend his sincere thanks to Tom. I continue to explore both digital and analogue photography and control my own editing and processing. I thrive on being creative, but am also mindful of the requirement of keeping within brief.

The Pre-match series focusses on the raw and gritty nature of the pre-match football experience. The photographic sequence was formed primarily at Liverpool Football Club, but has also been expanded to involve other clubs and sports. It remains an ongoing project.

Whilst still in its infancy the work received critical acclaim and was exhibited at The Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool I designed, created and published small paperback books ('zines') containing the work. These remain on sale at the gallery to this day, or via this web site.

Blood, Sweat and Tears concentrates on the hardworking, and often forgotten, tradespeople of Shropshire. I have long admired their skill and artistry and wished to document them in their often dangerous work spaces. Again I hope to expand this project further afield to hopefully produce a book edition.
